There are seasons when God adds, and there are seasons when God subtracts. I believe we are standing in a season of subtraction, and I want to tell you why that is good news.
I was lying across my bed praying when I heard the Lord say, My people are carrying too much luggage. Too many grave clothes. Too much stuff that is weighing them down. Then He said something that stopped me. There is no room for Me to move.
Think about that for a moment. You are a vessel. The Bible calls us earthen vessels that carry a treasure. But a vessel can only contain so much. If it is full of guilt, shame, regret, and old ways of thinking, there is no space left for the fresh thing God wants to pour in.
Most of us do not realize how full we are. We carry what we wish we had done ten years ago. We carry what somebody said about us twenty years ago. We carry relationships we should have released, attitudes we picked up in a hard season, and a running list of everything we think we got wrong. We call it being careful. We call it being responsible. God calls it luggage.
Here is the Word I heard. For thirty days, beginning October first, God is emptying out old ways of thinking and old thoughts. He is even dealing with some relationships. And He said it plainly. You can make room, or I will make room. But I am making room to move fresh in your life.
Some people hear that and get nervous. I want you to hear it as love. Jesus said He comes as a thief in the night. We have always read that as frightening. But what if part of it means this? What you will not give Him, He will quietly take away, because He wants you free more than He wants you comfortable.
So how do you make room? Start with honesty. Sit down with a notebook and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you are carrying that He never asked you to carry. Do not argue with the first thing He shows you. Write it down.
Then release it on purpose. Say it out loud. Lord, I give You this guilt. I give You this regret. I give You this way of thinking that keeps me small. Some things will lift the moment you say them. Others will take a few days. Keep giving them back.
Next, stop rehearsing. Could have, should have, would have is one of the heaviest bags a believer can carry. You cannot go back and fix yesterday. Jesus said no man, having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom. That is not a threat. It is direction. Face forward.
Finally, leave the space open. When you clear a room, the temptation is to fill it again with the next worry. Do not rush. Let it sit empty for a while. Give God time to move into the space you made.
Keep in mind that making room is not a one time event. It is a posture. The same way you clean out a closet and have to keep it clean, you will have to keep choosing what stays and what goes. Every morning, ask Him a simple question. Lord, what do I need to put down today? Then listen. He will tell you, and it will usually be lighter than you expect.
Letting go is not loss. It is preparation. God is not taking things from you to punish you. He is clearing the way for what He already has ready. The renewal He wants to bring is a renewal of your mind, your heart, and even your body, but He needs room.
This is your season to let go. Make room, and watch Him move.
