Break the Pattern: How to Rise Out of What is Finished

August is a number of new beginning, and I believe the doorway into that beginning has a name. Break the pattern. There is something you have been doing every day, thinking every day, and carrying every day that is not producing anything except exhaustion. It may not even be sin. Sometimes the thing holding you back is not wickedness. It is simply a season that is finished, kept alive out of habit.

Think of the man who lay by the pool for thirty eight years, waiting for the water to be troubled so he could be healed. He had a routine. He knew the schedule of the angel, the competition of the crowd, the disappointment of being too slow. When Jesus asked if he wanted to be made well, the man answered with his pattern. I have no one to help me into the water. But Jesus never put him in the pool. Jesus said rise, take up your bed, and walk. The healing was no longer in the water. It was standing in front of him. The anointing had moved from a place to a Person, and it required him to break a thirty eight year habit to receive it.

The pattern of waiting shows up everywhere in Scripture. The lame man at the Gate Beautiful sat and begged every day until Peter said silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you, rise and walk. The woman with the issue of blood spent everything she had going from physician to physician until she broke the pattern, pressed through the crowd, and touched the hem of His garment. The children of Israel wandered forty years in a wilderness pattern, and only Joshua and Caleb broke free to enter the promise. A woman was bowed over for eighteen years until one encounter straightened her back. Hannah grieved year after year until she rose, went to the temple, and refused to leave the same. In every story, the breakthrough required someone to rise up out of the familiar.

That is why this month is about your mind as much as your circumstances. Transformation comes one way, by the renewing of your mind. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he. If your thoughts keep circling the same wound from twenty years ago, your life will keep orbiting that wound. You cannot step into a new beginning while mentally living in an old ending. Some of the patterns that must break are not on your calendar at all. They are in your thought life.

Breaking a pattern also means taking your hands off of what God is trying to move. So many of us are worn out because we keep managing what we were told to release. We get in the middle of arguments that are not ours, carry burdens that were never assigned to us, and try to fix what only God can fix. Release it. Take your hands off of it. His ways are higher than yours, and He does not need your help. He needs your trust.

This requires wisdom, not harshness. Breaking a pattern does not mean cutting off everyone you love or declaring yourself too holy to be around people. It means guarding the temple. You are the dwelling place of God, so you get to watch what you submit to and what you listen to. You can love your family, serve your community, and still recognize when it is time to step back, take a breath, and protect your peace. Even Jesus withdrew. You are allowed to as well.

Here is the mercy in it. When you finally break the pattern, the grief is short. It may be sorrowful for thirty seconds, and then it becomes a whole new day. What felt impossible to release turns out to be the very thing that was blocking the flow. Let God do the housecleaning. Do not chase after what He is carrying out of your life. Let it go, and make room for what He is bringing in.

So take the invitation. Name the pattern. Rise up out of what is finished. This is your month of new beginning, and the first step is simply to stand.
