While I was away for a season, God completely redid my foundation on money and faith. What He showed me set me free, and I believe it will set you free too. If you have ever wondered what does faith without works mean, and why your faith feels stuck even though you keep giving, this is for you.
We all know the verse. Faith without works is dead. But somewhere along the way, many of us began reading it as faith without seed. We sow for a car. We sow for a house. We sow for a healing, a breakthrough, a Word. Then we wonder why our faith feels lifeless and our bank account looks the same.
Let me be clear before anyone gets upset. I love seed. I sow seed. God loves a cheerful giver, and whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. If your pastor asks for a seed and you have it, feel free to sow. Seed is a financial principle, and God honors it.
But a seed is for a harvest. It is not the work James was talking about.
What Does Faith Without Works Mean in James 2?
James asks a simple question. If a brother or sister is naked and has no food, and you say, go in peace, be warm and be filled, but you give them nothing they need, what good is that? Even so, faith without works is dead.
James is not describing a financial transaction. He is describing faith that moves toward people. Feeding the hungry. Clothing the naked. Visiting those in prison. Caring for the widow and the brokenhearted.
Jesus said it plainly. I was hungry and you fed Me. I was naked and you clothed Me. I was in prison and you visited Me. That is the work.
So when James says, show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works, he is not asking for a receipt. He is asking for a life that looks like Jesus.
What Did the Heroes of Faith Actually Do?
Turn to Hebrews 11 and look at what faith produced in the lives of the faithful. By faith Abel offered God what God asked for. By faith Enoch was translated. By faith Noah built the ark. By faith Abraham received the promise even when his body was as good as dead. By faith Sarah received strength to conceive.
Not one of them bought their promise. They put works with their faith.
Then there is Rahab. She was not in the right lineage. She had a past everyone knew about. Yet by faith she hid the spies, and God wrote her into the story of redemption. Rahab put works with her faith, and God blessed her when she was not even eligible.
Their works were not about earning God’s love. Salvation is a gift, and you cannot work your way into it. I wrote about that in Righteousness Is a Gift: Why You Cannot Earn What God Gives Free. Works are what a living faith does once it has received that gift.
Is Sowing Seed the Same as Faith?
No. Sowing is good, and it is biblical, but it is a different principle. Sowing is about harvest. Faith with works is about becoming like Christ and reaching people.
I have watched faithful people live in lack because they gave every dollar away and never did the other half of the work. I have met retired nurses with degrees riding the bus because they kept sowing and never recognized their harvest. That is not faith. That is a misunderstanding of faith.
You cannot buy the kingdom. Flesh and blood does not inherit it. The kingdom comes through a life that has been changed by the Spirit and then poured out for others.
Here is the shift God is asking us to make. Move from money only to works and money. Keep sowing. Sow seeds of greatness and seeds of wealth. But do not let a seed stand in for the work your hands were made to do.

How Do I Put Works With My Faith?
Ask the Lord a simple question this week. What work do You want my faith to do? Then listen, and act on what He shows you. Here are a few places to start.
Serve where people are hurting. Volunteer with a food ministry, help with a coat drive, or bring canned goods to your church.
Support those already doing the work. If you cannot go to the prison or the shelter, give to the people who do. That is still your work.
Make things right. Call the person you have avoided. Forgive the one who hurt you. Love is a work too.
Prepare before you leap. Faith is not reckless. Wisdom is the principal thing, so pray, plan, and count the cost before you step out.
It does not have to be big. It just has to be real.
Every month I go deeper into teachings like this one at Master Class Monday, two hours of prophetic teaching and activation on the last Monday of every month at 8:00 PM EST. It is free, and you are welcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does faith without works is dead mean?
It means real faith shows up in action. James teaches that faith which never moves toward people in love, service, and obedience is not alive. Works do not save you, but they prove your faith is real.
Is giving money the same as doing the works of faith?
No. Giving and sowing are good and biblical, but they are a financial principle tied to harvest. The works James describes are feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the prisoner, and walking in the fruit of the Spirit.
Can I be saved by works?
No. Salvation is a free gift of God through Jesus Christ. Works are not how you earn grace. They are what grace produces in a life that has received it.
Faith without works is dead. Not faith without seed. Put works with your faith, and watch your faith come alive.
